What Curtains And Blinds Suit Chelsea Windows?

Chelsea is not one kind of building, which is why a standard solution so rarely works here.

The stucco-fronted terraces off the King’s Road tend to give you tall, slim sash windows on the first floor, shorter ones as you go up, and shutters that are often still in place and still working. The red-brick mansion blocks behave differently again: deep reveals, a radiator under almost every window, and a lease that has opinions about what the window looks like from the street. Along Cheyne Walk and the Embankment the glazing is wider and lower, with wonderful light off the river and very little privacy from the pavement.

So most Chelsea schemes end up layered rather than simple:

The choice between recess and face-fixed matters more in Chelsea than in most places. A blind inside the recess keeps original joinery and working shutters clear, but it will let a little light past the edges. A face-fixed blind, or one extended beyond the opening, blocks far more light but covers some of the architrave. In a listed house that is a conversation to have before we measure, not after.

Yes. Measuring, making and fitting are all part of the service, and each is itemised separately on your estimate so you can see what it costs and why. We measure your windows ourselves, everything is made in our West London workroom, and we come back to fit it.

Where can I see fabric samples in Chelsea?

For larger projects we hold a consultation in your own home, going through samples at your own window and in your own light, which is where a fabric really shows what it will do. ABOUT US

A recent Chelsea project: a lower ground floor flat off Sloane Square

We were the soft furnishings partner on a flat renovation just off Sloane Square, working with interior designer Alex Meachen. It is a lower ground floor apartment with its own private garden, and that set the brief: privacy during the day, street lights kept out at night, and neither at the expense of the scheme.

At the front we used café curtains and sheer roller blinds. Elsewhere, blackout Roman blinds paired with curtains. One window is an awkward shape where a blind would have fought the room, so café curtains went in instead and the space became a study area. In an L-shaped room with a triangular window, a full-length curtain does double duty as room divider and blackout, which is what turned that corner into a bedroom.

Alex and his client spent two hours in our studio at the start of the project, building fabric combinations room by room — window dressings, headboards and cushions chosen together so each scheme balanced. In one bedroom the headboard is plainly the hero, so the curtains and blind stay neutral and a trim ties the scheme together.

Behind a finished room like that is a longer list of people than anyone sees: measuring with Tom, who leads our installation team, the workroom and workshop who make the curtains, blinds and soft furnishings, and the delivery that gets them there intact. That is the part that keeps a project free of surprises.
