And At The Very Top Of The Range?
We have dressed complete country houses, including a 23-room heritage hall at £97,000, and we are currently making for a 28-room country hall. If your project is at that scale, you are in experienced hands.
Katherine's Key Takeout: share your budget with us at the very start. It lets us make intelligent, informed decisions together, put the money in the right places, and get the most value and joy from every pound you spend.
What Drives The Price Of Bespoke Curtains And Blinds Up?
Every piece is designed for your windows and handmade for your home, so a handful of choices shape the final figure. We are happy to be open about all of them:
- The number and size of your windows, the starting point of any quotation
- Window complexity: a bay affects the hardware, the measuring and the fitting far more than a straight window
- Curtains or blinds: curtains usually cost more, needing hardware and more fabric
- The heading: a fabric-hungry wave heading can use over twice the fullness of a single pinch pleat
- Lining, trims and motorisation, with battery motors giving the slimmest, cleanest headrail
The Fabric Is The Big One
Fabric is usually the single biggest element of any quotation. The same Roman blind can more than double in price on fabric choice alone, moving from a £28 per metre cotton to a designer linen at four or five times that. For the full picture, read our guide to what affects the cost of bespoke curtains and blinds.

Katherine's Key Takeout: fabric is the biggest lever in any quotation. Part of our job is guiding you on which rooms deserve the special fabric, and where a beautiful plain will give you the look for less.
What Can Bring The Cost Of Your Curtains And Blinds Down?
Being on a budget does not mean compromising on a beautiful result. It means making smart decisions, and a good designer helps you make them:
- Choose blinds where they suit, on smaller and more straightforward windows
- Put the special fabric on the smaller canvas, and let the statement print earn its keep
- Economise on a plain, splurge on a trim: the wow factor without the wow price
- Invest room by room: spend where you live, simplify where you don't
‘If you have set your heart on an expensive print, then using it on a Roman blind can be less eye-watering than using it on a pair of full-length curtains.’
Katherine Brown
One word of caution: we never recommend saving money on lining. A good lining protects the fabric and makes curtains hang beautifully, so saving there is a false economy.

★★★★★
‘Katherine made some great suggestions about what would and would not work, as well as the pros and cons of curtains or blinds in each room. The pricing structure she provides is very transparent, which is reassuring.’

Why Is Bespoke More Than Buying Curtains Online?
A fair question, and let us say it plainly: there is a time and a place for an online blind. A simple window, a rental, a room you will change soon. But it is worth being honest about what the lower price hands back to you.
Who Is Holding The Tape Measure?
With an online order, you are responsible for the final cut. Before you click buy, ask yourself:
- Am I confident in my own measurements, knowing the fabric is cut from them?
- Do I know how the radiator, the furniture or the alcove affects where a curtain can hang?
- Have I allowed for the cornice and the coving?
- Do I actually want all of that on my shoulders?
One slip, where 205cm somehow becomes 250cm, and the fabric has already been cut.
The Fabrics You Simply Cannot Get Online
Online, you choose from a limited range, ordering samples a few at a time and posting them back. A consultation brings the boutique fabric houses to your own home: collections you cannot access online, compared side by side in your own light, against your own walls.
Or Hand The Whole Thing Over
From that first visit, the job passes to experts. Between Katherine and her fitters there are decades of experience, and handing your project over is transformational, for the result and for your stress levels.
‘An interior designer client came to us having used an online service, saying, “I will never do that again. The curtains arrived creased and were a big let down. Not only did I have to put them up, but I had to steam them first.”’
Katherine Brown
Katherine's Key Takeout: measuring is where online orders go wrong. Katherine measures your windows herself and briefs Tom, our fitter, personally, so nothing is lost between the tape measure and the final fit.
Where Does Katherine Brown Curtains And Blinds Sit In The Market?
‘Bespoke’ gets used loosely, so here is the whole window dressing market laid out honestly:
| The Market | Who Is In It | What You Get | Typical Spend Per Window |
| Ready made | IKEA, Dunelm, the high street | Standard sizes off the shelf; you hang them | Tens of pounds |
| Made to measure, online | Blinds Direct and similar | Cut to the sizes you supply, from set fabric ranges; you measure, you fit | Low hundreds |
| Made to measure, serviced | Hillarys, John Lewis | An advisor visit or in-store appointment, set collections, standard fitting | Hundreds |
| Bespoke, handmade | Katherine Brown Curtains and Blinds and other independent workrooms | Handmade for your exact windows, designer fabric access, personal measuring, dedicated fitting | From £350 a blind to £3,000+ a curtained window |
| Couture interiors | The top-end design houses | Showpiece work at showpiece prices | Many thousands |
We are in the bespoke tier by design, priced a little above its middle, and we are not really in the same market as the high street at all. Nor will we chase the couture end, where we think prices stop being about the work.
Why The Serviced Tier Is Not The Same Thing
However good the in-store advisor, they are not standing in your home. They cannot see the radiator under the window, the return on the bay, or the bookcase that means one curtain will never draw back fully. Katherine spots those things because she is in the room, and they are the difference between curtains that fit and curtains that transform. It is a completely different process, not a slightly better one.
‘It has got to feel fair. When you see your quotation broken down into fabric, making, measuring and fitting, you should be able to see exactly what everything costs and why.’
Katherine Brown
Made To Be Loved For Decades
Bespoke curtains are not a fast purchase. Made well, lined well and fitted well, they last for decades, which changes the arithmetic of the price. The clearest proof we can offer: we recently restored a set of heritage curtains at a 23-room country hall that had hung for thirty years. Our brief was to bring them back, not replace them, because they were still worth saving. Read that story in our Serlby Hall case study.

When Are Bespoke Curtains And Blinds Worth It, And When Are They Not?
Honestly? This is your decision, and bespoke is not always the right answer. We would rather tell you that than sell to you. It is probably not worth investing in bespoke window dressings for:
- A rented home, or one you will leave within a year or two
- An attic or storage room you rarely set foot in
- A guest bedroom that sees three weekends a year
Our guide to using a professional curtain designer versus buying online will help you weigh it up.
Except, Perhaps, The Window On The Stairs
People often assume the little window on the stairs, in the hall or along the passage is not worth fussing over. In fact it is one of the windows our clients thank us for most, because it is the window you pass a dozen times a day. It may be small, but dressed beautifully it brings you joy every single day, and that, in the end, is what we are for: helping you love where you live.
★★★★★
‘Katherine made four gorgeous Roman blinds for my bedroom and every part of the process was a pleasure. Her service is not cheap, but you are paying for real expertise and quality, and I feel the pricing was fair.’

Frequently Asked Questions
Why Is There Such A Wide Price Range For Bespoke Curtains And Blinds?
Because everything Katherine Brown Curtains and Blinds makes is bespoke. Window count and size, curtains or blinds, heading, lining, fabric and trimmings all move the figure, which is why we give you a detailed itemised estimate rather than a single headline price.
Can Katherine Brown Curtains And Blinds Work To My Budget?
Yes, and we would rather know it from the start. Blinds in place of curtains on some windows, a plain fabric lifted by a beautiful trim, or focusing investment on the rooms that matter most: there are many ways we make a budget go further.
Do Bespoke Curtains Really Cost Thousands Per Window?
Often, yes, once fabric, making, track and fitting are included, and our project table above shows real examples rather than a vague range. But our projects have also started from a few hundred pounds for a single blind. The honest answer for your windows takes one conversation.
Is Bespoke Worth It Compared To Buying Curtains Online?
Online is cheaper because you take on the measuring, the decisions and the fitting, and the making is by machine. For straightforward windows that can work well. For period homes, bay windows and the rooms you care about most, accurate measuring, boutique fabric access and a proper finish usually pay for themselves in a result you will love for years.
