Made To Measure Roman Blinds In London

Roman blinds bring softness, warmth and a tailored elegance that few other window treatments can match. We make bespoke, made to measure Roman blinds for privacy, for gentle light control, for blackout and for windows where the blind becomes the centrepiece of the room. Before anything else, we want to understand what your blind needs to do for you. Every project starts there.

‘The first thing you’d want to know is, is it functional or decorative? If it’s for blackout, you need to know it will let in some light at the sides. But if somebody just wants something decorative at the window, you can put lovely trims on the bottom, you can put braids on it. It really is about understanding what the blind is there to do.’ – Katherine Brown

Why Choose A Roman Blind?

Roman blinds are endlessly versatile. They sit beautifully in spaces where curtains would overwhelm, they layer wonderfully with other window treatments, and they let you use fabrics, trims and details that make each one feel truly personal. From bedrooms and living rooms to studies, kitchens, landings and dormer windows, a Roman blind adds warmth and character without taking up floor space.

In a bathroom, a Roman blind can look lovely, but we will always be honest with you. If you are going to be raising and lowering it several times a day, a roller blind is simply easier to live with. We would rather steer you towards something that works beautifully day after day than something that looks right but frustrates you.

‘If somebody says it’s for my study and I just want a bit of privacy, you might do a sheer or a semi-sheer, because they don’t want to pull down a blind during the daytime that blocks all the light out.’ – Katherine Brown

‘With made-to-measure blinds, people are often surprised by how far we’ve come in terms of style options.’

Every Style Of Roman Blind, Handmade In Our London Workroom

Every Roman blind we produce is made to measure, and within that there are several distinct styles. Lined and interlined Roman blinds give the fullest, most luxurious finish, with real body and drape for rooms where the blind is the centrepiece. Lined Roman blinds are a touch lighter but still beautifully structured, ideal for studies and hallways. Unlined and sheer Roman blinds filter daylight rather than block it, perfect where you want daytime privacy without sitting in the dark. Soft fold and waterfall styles offer a more relaxed or more decorative look, with gently cascading folds.

Most curtain fabrics work beautifully on a Roman blind, though very heavy upholstery-weight cloth is best avoided because the blind needs to fold cleanly. We source from some of the finest fabric houses, including Romo, Linwood, Sanderson, Colefax and Fowler, Designers Guild and The Pure Edit, and we are always happy to work with a fabric you have chosen yourself.

‘A lot of fabrics will work for Roman blinds, but very heavy fabrics are probably not advisable, because the nature of it is it has got to fold up. You might fall in love with an upholstery fabric that just isn’t going to work.’ – Katherine Brown

Roman Blinds And Blackout

We are always upfront about this: Roman blinds, however beautifully made, will let some light in at the sides. Fitting inside a window recess helps, and making the blind slightly wider than the opening can reduce the gaps further. But if total darkness is essential, we will talk you through the options.

For clients who need near-total blackout and a decorative finish, we sometimes fit a zipped cassette blind inside the recess with a Roman blind dressed over the top. The cassette handles the blackout, the Roman blind handles the beauty, and the cassette headrail is completely hidden.

‘If you love the look of a curtain pole, adding a Roman blind or a roller blind with a very small pelmet can help enormously with blackout. It is that compromise between wanting the pole and accepting a little more light, but if you layer up, it can make a real difference.’ – Katherine Brown

Motorised Roman Blinds

We fit motorised Roman blinds wherever you want the convenience of remote operation, and they are ideal for hard-to-reach windows or rooms where you want everything to feel effortless. Battery-powered motors are our preferred option because the headrail stays slim and neat, where a mains-powered motor needs a chunkier headrail that can let more light in at the sides.

Rechargeable battery options mean there is no need for the expense of a power feed, and motorised blinds can be voice-controlled as part of a smart home setup, so if you already use a system like that, your blinds fit right in.

★★★★★ ‘Katherine made four gorgeous roman blinds for my bedroom. Every part of the process was a pleasure. I loved the fabric she suggested and there was a huge amount of choice. Her service is not cheap, but you are paying for real expertise and quality and I feel the pricing was fair. The blinds were expertly fitted by Chris. The whole thing from start to finish was pretty seamless and my new blinds are a joy!’ – Catherine J

When A Roman Blind Is The Right Choice

A Roman blind comes into its own when you want the blind to be a feature. In bedrooms and living rooms, an interlined Roman blind in a beautiful fabric becomes the centrepiece of the room. In studies and home offices, a lined or sheer Roman gives you privacy and gentle control of the light. On dormer windows, landings and staircases, where there is no wall space at the sides for curtains, a Roman blind adds colour and warmth without getting in the way.

Where a window will be operated constantly, or where budget is the priority, we will happily point you towards a roller blind instead. Honesty about the right choice is how we make sure you love the result.

Roman Blinds FAQ

  • Do Roman Blinds Give You Privacy?

A lined Roman blind gives you good privacy and a clean, tailored look, which is one of the first things many clients ask about. If you want privacy during the day without blocking all the light, an unlined or sheer Roman blind filters the light while softening the view, which works particularly well in a study or home office. Roman blinds also layer beautifully with curtains.

  • Can Roman Blinds Block Out The Light?

Roman blinds, however beautifully made, will let some light in at the sides. Fitting inside the window recess and making the blind slightly wider than the opening reduces the gaps. For near-total blackout we sometimes fit a zipped cassette blind inside the recess with a Roman blind dressed over the top, so the cassette handles the blackout and the Roman blind handles the beauty. A roller blind behind a curtain pole can work in the same way.

  • What Is The Difference Between A Lined And An Interlined Roman Blind?

A lined Roman blind is structured and tailored, gives privacy, and suits studies, hallways and rooms where you want quality without weight. An interlined Roman blind has an extra felt-like layer that adds body and drape, giving the folds real depth and presence. It is the fullest, most luxurious finish, and the one we recommend where the blind is the centrepiece of the room.

  • How Much Does A Roman Blind Cost?

Every Roman blind we make is bespoke, so the cost depends on the size and number of windows, the fabric you choose, whether the blind is lined or interlined, any trims, and whether you want motorisation. We provide a detailed itemised estimate from the start, so you always know what you are paying for. You can read more in our guide to what affects the cost of bespoke curtains and blinds.

  • Can Roman Blinds Be Motorised?

Yes. We fit motorised Roman blinds where you want the convenience of remote operation, and they are ideal for hard-to-reach windows. Battery-powered motors are our preferred option because the headrail stays slim and neat, and they can be voice-controlled as part of a smart home setup.

Your guide to blinds

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are created using fabric, with vertical strings and horizontal rods, allowing the blind to be raised in folds like a concertina. Add decorative pulls, trims and shaped bottoms to add interest.

London Blinds

A variation on the Roman blind is the London blind, which gives a slightly softer look as the blind has more fullness, which blouses out as the blind is raised.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds can be used alone or with other window dressings and are often used behind curtains and Roman blinds to give additional blackout properties or daytime privacy.

Venetian Blinds

Stylish horizontal slatted wooden blinds are often used at ground level to achieve a traditional look which maintains a degree of privacy even when open.

Skylight Blinds

We are a Velux blinds stockist and can also source skylight blinds suitable for other makes of skylight windows. We also offer manual and motorised flat roof light blinds.

Motorised Blinds

Motorised blinds are an excellent option for large or difficult-to-reach windows. Don’t forget that they can now be voice-controlled as part of your smart home set-up.
