Made To Measure Roller Blinds In London

Privacy is the reason most of our London clients choose roller blinds. A sheer roller gives you daytime privacy without losing natural light, and they work beautifully alongside curtains or Roman blinds. But privacy is just where it begins. We make bespoke, made to measure roller blinds for blackout, for decoration, for UV protection and for windows where nothing else quite fits. Every project starts with understanding what the blind needs to do for you.

‘Roller blinds are brilliant for privacy. You can get some really good sheer fabrics that go on roller blinds. Most of the roller blinds we do are for privacy.’ — Katherine Brown

Roller Blinds For Effortless Daytime Privacy

This is where roller blinds really come into their own. A sheer roller blind is one of the most effective and affordable ways to get daytime privacy without losing natural light. It looks clean, it works quietly alongside other window treatments, it helps diffuse direct sunlight and it is hard wearing enough for the busiest rooms in the house.

We often fit sheer rollers in combination with curtains or Roman blinds. The roller handles privacy during the day while the curtains provide warmth, texture and blackout at night. It is a layered approach that gives you the best of both, and it is one of the combinations we recommend most often.

‘They’re really effective, they can look very nice, especially if combined with other treatments. They are hard wearing. And they don’t cost so much either.’ — Katherine Brown

‘With made-to-measure blinds, people are often surprised by how far we’ve come in terms of style options.’

Decorative Roller Blinds That Transform A Window

Roller blinds can be far more decorative than people expect. Because the blind takes up almost nothing when raised, you keep maximum daylight during the day. When lowered, the fabric becomes the feature.

We use shaped hems, contrast braids, piping, tassels and decorative pulls to make roller blinds that feel like a design choice, not a compromise. Paired with a decorative pelmet, they can transform a window that might otherwise be overlooked. On smaller windows especially, where a Roman blind would eat into too much glass, a decorative roller is often the better solution.

‘Where we use roller blinds for blackout is where you’ve got very small windows and you don’t want a Roman blind that’s going to take up a third of the window. A roller blind is a really good option. And what we do then is use fabric and trims and make it very decorative.’ — Katherine Brown

‘Roller Blinds For Blackout

It is rare for a client to come to us wanting a blackout roller blind as their only window treatment. Where it does happen, it tends to be on very small windows: a cottage bedroom, a narrow landing window, or a bathroom where space simply rules out anything else. Even then, a bespoke roller can look genuinely lovely rather than purely utilitarian.

More commonly, blackout roller blinds work as a partner to curtains on a pole. If the pole lets light spill over the top, a roller blind fitted behind it closes the gap. I will usually suggest adding a small pelmet for the roller blind too, because even a roller will let a sliver of light in at the top without one.

‘Most of the time we would suggest a blackout roller blind if our client wants something super minimalist, or if it is to be used as a supplementary option if somebody has curtains on a pole and they’re worried about the light coming in over the top.’ — Katherine Brown

For clients who need near-total blackout and want a decorative finish as well, a zipped cassette blind fitted inside the window recess with a Roman blind dressed over the top can be a very effective combination. The cassette blind handles the blackout, the Roman blind handles the beauty, and the cassette headrail is completely hidden.

Motorised Roller Blinds

Motorised roller blinds are one of the most popular motorisation options we fit. A simple remote control sends the blind up and down, which makes them ideal for hard-to-reach windows or rooms where you want everything to feel effortless. Rechargeable battery-powered options mean you don’t need to go to the expense of creating a power feed.

They can also be voice-controlled as part of a smart home setup, so if you are already using a system like that, your blinds fit right in.

★★★★★ ‘We ordered three roman blinds and one roller blind through Katherine Brown Curtains and Blinds and are really pleased with them. Katherine brought a range of fabrics to our house; we chose the options we liked with her advice. A few weeks later and they’ve been delivered and fitted and we’re delighted! Very high quality blinds. I’d highly recommend them.’ — Fiona M

When We Recommend A Roller Blind Over A Roman

There are a few situations where I will steer you towards a roller blind rather than a Roman.

The blind is going to be operated several times a day. Bathrooms are the classic example. A roller blind pulls down and springs back without fuss. A Roman blind in the same situation can becomes a chore.

Budget is a factor. Roller blinds use less fabric and have a simpler construction, making them a more accessible option without sacrificing quality when they are made bespoke.

Privacy is the primary concern and there is no need for heavy insulation or blackout. A sheer roller does the job cleanly and affordably.

★★★★★ ‘We recently worked with Katherine to make roller blinds for our lounge and loft conversion windows. She made the process simple, advising on colours and fabrics to suit our spaces. Katherine provided a five star service from end to end and we are very happy with the end result. We can’t recommend her enough. Top notch service and products.’ — Natalie B

Roller Blinds FAQ

  • Are Roller Blinds Good For Privacy

Roller blinds are one of the best options for daytime privacy, particularly when made with a sheer fabric. They let natural light through while screening the view from outside, and they work well on their own or paired with curtains or Roman blinds for a layered look. As Katherine puts it: ‘You can get some really good sheer fabrics that go on roller blinds. Most of the roller blinds we do are for privacy.’

  • Can Roller Blinds Block Out Light?

A blackout roller blind will block most light, though a small amount can still creep in at the edges. For near-total blackout, we often fit a zipped cassette blind inside the window recess, sometimes with a Roman blind dressed over the top for a more decorative finish. Adding a small pelmet above the roller also helps close the gap at the top.

  • What Is The Difference Between A Roller Blind And A Roman Blind?

A roller blind wraps around a tube and takes up almost no space when raised, making it ideal for small windows or rooms where you need maximum daylight. A Roman blind folds into soft pleats and creates a more textured, layered look. We often recommend rollers for bathrooms, high-use windows and privacy, and Romans where warmth, pattern and presence matter most. The two work beautifully together as well.

  • Can Roller Blinds Be Motorised?

Yes. Motorised roller blinds are one of the most popular motorisation options we fit. Battery-powered motors keep the headrail compact and the look clean, and they can be voice-controlled as part of a smart home setup.

  • Are Roller Blinds Suitable For Bathrooms?

Roller blinds are an excellent choice for bathrooms. They are easy to operate, which matters in a room where blinds are used several times a day. A sheer roller gives you privacy during the day, and a blackout roller is ideal for bathrooms that also serve as dressing rooms.

Your guide to blinds

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are created using fabric, with vertical strings and horizontal rods, allowing the blind to be raised in folds like a concertina. Add decorative pulls, trims and shaped bottoms to add interest.

London Blinds

A variation on the Roman blind is the London blind, which gives a slightly softer look as the blind has more fullness, which blouses out as the blind is raised.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds can be used alone or with other window dressings and are often used behind curtains and Roman blinds to give additional blackout properties or daytime privacy.

Venetian Blinds

Stylish horizontal slatted wooden blinds are often used at ground level to achieve a traditional look which maintains a degree of privacy even when open.

Skylight Blinds

We are a Velux blinds stockist and can also source skylight blinds suitable for other makes of skylight windows. We also offer manual and motorised flat roof light blinds.

Motorised Blinds

Motorised blinds are an excellent option for large or difficult-to-reach windows. Don’t forget that they can now be voice-controlled as part of your smart home set-up.
